In line with the requirements of the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) Regulations 2016, all childcare practitioners must complete and maintain up-to-date certification in the following essential training areas:
- First Aid
- Fire Safety
- Manual Handling
- Food Safety and Hygiene
- Children First (Child Safeguarding)
In addition to these mandatory requirements, practitioners are encouraged to engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to enhance their skills, knowledge, and professional practice, examples of which are NSAI, Children’s participation, Critical Incident and DEI. Ongoing CPD supports the delivery of high-quality early years care and education, ensuring that services remain compliant with current regulations and best practice standards.
First Aid
The Health & Safety Authority (HSA) now recognises the PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) training course as meeting the needs of occupational first aid. The FAR Standard was developed by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) an independent statutory body who set the standards for education and training for pre-hospital emergency care in Ireland. On completion of this 3-day course, the First Aid Responder will be equipped with the necessary practical skills, knowledge and confidence to give effective life support, diagnose and treat injuries or illness, and maintain care and comfort of a patient who has become suddenly ill or injured in the workplace or elsewhere until the arrival of emergency medical services. Also included is training in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the administration of aspirin for cases of a suspected heart attack. Pre-hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) Certified for 2 years.

Fire Safety
Under both the 1981 Fire Services Act and Regulation 8 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 your business is required by law to provide staff with adequate fire safety training. This course will cover all the fundamental elements of fire safety and prevention
Manual Handling
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, (General Applications) Regulations 2007, Chapter 4 of Part 2, outline the requirements that must be adhered to in relation to manual handling. The key requirements include:
- Carrying out a manual handling risk assessment of existing manual handling tasks before making an informed decision on what manual handling tasks need to be avoided or reduced.
- Organising tasks to allow the use of mechanical or other means to avoid or reduce the need for the manual handling of loads by employees in the workplace. The hazards can be avoided or reduced through the introduction of appropriate organisational measures for example improved layout of a work area to reduce unnecessary long carrying distances; or the use of appropriate means, in particular mechanical equipment.
- Providing instruction and training to relevant staff.
Food Safety
It is a legal requirement that staff who are involved in a food environment are trained and/or supervised commensurate with their work activity. The responsibility for the supervision and training of staff lies with the proprietor of the food business.
Children First
Children First is National Guidance that promotes the protection of children from abuse and neglect. It states what organisations need to do to keep children safe, and what different bodies and the general public should do if they are concerned about a child’s safety and welfare. A new child protection and welfare training course for the early years sector is now available and is being delivered by accredited trainers in Tipperary Childcare Committee.
